Introducing Tapping: An Introductory Guide to EFT for Moms

“When all your energies are brought into harmony, your body flourishes. And when your body flourishes, your soul has a soil in which it can blossom in the world. These are the ultimate reasons for energy medicine—to prepare the soil and nurture the blossom.”
― Donna Eden

Motherhood is beautiful, challenging, rewarding, and at times, incredibly stressful. As moms, we often find ourselves facing emotional ups and downs, from the euphoria of a baby’s first smile to the frustration of a toddler’s relentless tantrums.

But what if there was a tool—a gentle, accessible technique—that could help us navigate these intense emotions? Enter EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, commonly known as ‘tapping’.

What is EFT Tapping?
EFT, or Tapping, is a psychological acupressure technique that combines ancient Chinese acupressure and modern psychology. It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while voicing positive affirmations. This simple process can help to realign the body’s energy system and address the emotional blocks causing discomfort or distress.

Why Tapping for Moms?

Motherhood brings its unique set of stressors. From sleep deprivation and mom guilt to balancing work and family life, there’s no shortage of triggers that can lead to feelings of overwhelm.

Tapping provides a swift, effective method to:

  1. Release pent-up emotions: When you feel like you’re about to burst into tears or scream out of sheer frustration, tapping can be a way to release and process those feelings safely.
  2. Manage stress and anxiety: EFT can reduce the emotional impact of memories or triggers causing distress, making it easier to cope with daily challenges.
  3. Boost self-esteem: Affirmations combined with tapping can bolster your self-worth, helping you feel more confident in your mothering abilities.
  4. Address physical pain: Many moms report physical discomforts, whether it’s from childbirth, breastfeeding, or simply carrying kids around. Tapping can assist in managing these physical symptoms.

How to Start Tapping

  1. Identify the Issue: Start by pinpointing what’s bothering you. It could be “I’m overwhelmed with laundry” or “I’m anxious about my child’s health.”
  2. Choose an Affirmation: Create a positive affirmation that acknowledges the problem and introduces a positive spin, like “Even though I’m overwhelmed with laundry, I deeply love and accept myself.”
  3. Start Tapping: Using your fingertips, tap 5-7 times on each of the nine meridian points in the following sequence:
  • Top of the head
  • Eyebrow (inner corners)
  • Side of the eye
  • Under the eye
  • Under the nose
  • Chin
  • Collarbone
  • Under the arm (about a hand’s width from the armpit)
  • Wrists

As you tap, repeat your affirmation. For more intense emotions, you might need to go through the sequence multiple times.

Final Thoughts

EFT or Tapping may seem unusual at first glance, but countless moms (and others) swear by its effectiveness. The beauty of tapping is its accessibility—you can do it anywhere, anytime, and it requires no special tools, just your own fingertips and a few moments of focus.

So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or just in need of a moment of emotional release, give tapping a try. After all, as moms, we owe it to ourselves and our families to find tools that help us stay emotionally balanced and present. Remember, every mama has the power to heal and thrive.
